Starting Out: The Early Days

Alistair started at 19 while studying music at university. He kicked things off as a drum tutor in a tiny space that felt more like an old shack than a place for lessons. But it didn’t take long for him to realize that teaching music was his true calling. His goal was clear: he wanted to make a big difference in music education. Working as an employee at Good Time Music Academy, he wore many hats, helping boost student numbers and eventually leading the academy to its first milestone of over 1,000 students. This experience set the stage for his next big move, starting his own school in a new city.

Building the School: Strategy and Vision

When Alistair moved to a new city, he was starting from scratch. With no local connections or resources, he leaned on the strategies he had learned at Good Time Music Academy. He knew what made music education work and how to stand out in a crowded field.

Instead of focusing on typical after-school programs, Alistair decided to offer in-school music lessons. He recognized that after-school programs had too many administrative hurdles and high costs, which made them less effective. This insight allowed him to cater directly to the needs of his target audience while focusing on growth.

Building a Community: The Power of Connections

One of the most pivotal moments in Alistair’s journey came when he began forming connections within his local community. With support from his mother, he reached out to local schools, pitching the idea of bringing music lessons to their classrooms. This strategy showed how creativity and determination could open doors when starting something new.

Through hard work and persistence, Alistair gained access to three schools for music lessons, and as his reputation grew, so did his student base. His ultimate goal was to provide affordable, high-quality music education to every child, and the community ties he built were key to making that happen.

Adapting and Evolving: Staying Ahead of the Curve

The music education industry is always changing, and Alistair is no stranger to adapting. He’s constantly exploring new ideas, like early childhood programs, to meet the growing demand. Alistair also aims to expand into underserved communities, ensuring more kids have access to music education.

He’s been working with local councils to address financial barriers families face when it comes to music lessons. Alistair’s forward-thinking mindset is pushing him to think beyond traditional music school limits, always striving to create more opportunities for children, no matter their background.

Community Engagement: A Network of Support

Alistair deeply believes in the power of community. He’s an active member of mentorship groups like #BAMSQUAD, where music educators share advice and support one another. The group emphasizes the importance of working together to solve problems and celebrate wins, a philosophy that Alistair has embraced in his own work.
