Five Things That Will Change Your Life as a Music School Owner

When I think back to teaching on my own and owning a job rather than a business, I didn't have freedom. I was my own boss. That was one small form of freedom. But I didn't really have the freedom to do whatever I wanted at any time. And so the first thing is freedom. When you actually change to building a music school, if you get it all running successfully and a team around you doing a great job, you actually have the freedom to kind of do what you want. Now, because you love it, you choose to work in it and you choose to create new things and exciting things. But you finally have that freedom where if you wanna take a week off, you wanna take a couple weeks off, you wanna take a day off and who knows, go watch a movie by yourself in the middle of the day, that stuff's actually available to you if you are not bound by the schedule of I have to teach 30, 40, 100 students every week and I have to be here. It's almost like being driven by a school bell. We don't want that, that's not freedom. And so the first thing, if you can get a successful music school happening, you kind of get some actual freedom back.

Second thing that's really amazing that will change your life is that you have a sellable asset. When you just own a job, even though you're self-employed and technically you might even have an LLC, a limited liability company, it's not really a sellable business, right? And so when you actually have a music school, it is a sellable business. So when you get to the end of the journey, when it comes time to move on, you don't just give the list to someone else, you don't just give it to someone to teach and take over, you have something that people will pay tens, hundreds of thousands of dollars for and so you're able to take that and take it into your next project or take it into retirement if you're leaving the workforce. It's a sellable asset and so having a music school that's sellable will totally change your life.

Third thing that will change your life when you own a music school, creating jobs. Man, this was one of the most single, most rewarding things, the amount of jobs that we created. We had just so many people from part-time through to full-time, through to many people actually I paid more than I paid myself along the way, especially in the early years but even later on there were people that I paid more than myself as a salary. Obviously I got a lot more from the profit of the business but that's so rewarding to be able to give that friend a job, to be able to give that student that you've seen grow up and take their skills to the next level and come and help and work in your business to be able to provide that solo mom and admin job or that dad going through a hard time, a job that gives them meaning and purpose and so he can support his family. Just all the people that you meet with all the different life experiences, doesn't matter, teenagers, kids, all the jobs and work that you can give people just makes such a massive difference in people's lives and they become friends and connections forever. It's really life-changing.

Fourth thing is having a team around you. It's so lonely teaching on your own and running your own little studio. Yes, you can get social interactions from whatever it is, friends, family, church, sports teams, all that sort of stuff. That's great too but day-to-day in your work, it's like a third of your life, right? If you go work eight hours and you sleep eight hours and then there's eight hours for fun or whatever, like a third of your life you're working in your business and it's just way more fun when you actually have that team around you and when the team's on fire, it's the most exciting experience and that totally changes your life. I'll tell you, some of my best memories of my music school was just the different leadership teams that we had, the different teachers, the different divisions that we created as we grew. It's so much fun. So building a team around you that's just as passionate as you about what you're creating, it'll change your life.

Fifth thing, this is probably the biggest one to be honest, being able to give more. If you have more money, you're able to give more money. If you're a generous person who loves helping people because the art of teaching is literally like, I have all this knowledge and skill and experience, I wanna gift it to you. Yes, you pay me for lessons but I'm pouring out my knowledge and advice and experience and tips and tricks into you. That's why we see most music teachers are generous people. So when they actually create a music school, their income and their revenue grows and they're able to be more generous. So more money multiplies who they already are and they're able to achieve incredible things. I remember having early on, probably like you, you'll have that student or two that's got a real tough family situation. So you either give them a massive discount or they're free or someone helps sponsor their lessons and that's really cool. And as we grew, we were able to do that for more and more people. Eventually ended up having a charitable trust as another aspect of our music school. And we raised hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars and we were able to gift all these free lessons to kids that couldn't afford it. We even got to the level, well, still there at the moment with the team and they bring kids in by the bus load to the building to have lessons for free and we even get food sponsors. So they get fed afternoon tea and snacks and they get to go on cool music trips and do concerts and talent quests and all this sort of stuff because we're able to earn a whole lot more money, rally people around the cause of what we were doing and they get inspired and they give more money and you're able to help more people and on and on it goes. And so number five, the fifth thing that will change your life as a music school owner is being able to give more. So exciting.
