How to Build a Successful Music School: Insights from Alistair

Imagine going from zero students to 950 students per week in a local music school, but also doing it in a town you've never lived in before and achieving it in less than three and a half years. Well, that's what my friend Alistair has done, and I'm going to share his incredible journey with you today.

Alistair, the founder of Epic Music Academy, recently sat down with me for a 55-minute interview where he shared his strategies and experiences of going from zero to 950 students in just three and a half years. It's truly mind-blowing.

Before we dive into the highlights of Alistair's story, I want to mention that he had a competitive advantage that most people won't have. He worked for me for seven years and learned the ins and outs of running a successful music school. This experience allowed him to start his own music school in a new town with a solid foundation of knowledge.

The first principle we can learn from Alistair's story is the importance of getting the strategy right. When I was growing my own music school, it took me years to truly understand what I was doing. But with Alistair's experience and guidance, we were able to develop a clear strategic plan for his music school right from the start. This helped him avoid wasting time on ineffective strategies and focus on what really works.

Another crucial aspect of Alistair's success is his possession of the "humble, hungry, smart" qualities. These qualities, as outlined in the book "Ideal Team Player" by Patrick Lencioni, include being humble, hungry for success, and possessing great people skills. Alistair excels in all three areas, making him an exceptional leader and team member.

One key takeaway from Alistair's story is the importance of tapping into existing resources. Rather than building everything from scratch, he utilized the resources and materials available to him, including our Build a Music School program. This saved him time, money, and stress, allowing him to focus on what truly matters – growing his music school.

Alistair also identified and solved a problem with student retention, particularly among five and six-year-olds. By developing a specialized program for this age group, he was able to increase retention rates and significantly grow his student numbers.
