USING MASTERMINDS TO GROW YOUR STUDIO FAST

First up, how did a Mastermind group help me grow a successful music school? 

I got hooked on being part of Mastermind groups in my early 20’s when I started one with three other business-owning friends from high school.

Even though we were young and a little inexperienced, this was an incredibly supportive group in which I could share my biggest problems and struggles as a business owner, and regularly get the chance to take a 20-minute deep dive with others to receive helpful advice that would allow me to plan the steps I could to take to eventually crush my chief challenges.

That group was instrumental in helping me grow my music school to the point where I was able to sell it for a healthy profit, and since then I have opted to be in many different Mastermind groups, including the one I am part of today that helps me develop the Build a Music School membership since I founded it. 

Based on this experience, I believe if you are able join a well-structured Mastermind group it can significantly improve your mindset as a business owner, and bring about positive change in your life.

1. All the brainpower is in the room in that moment

That means for the 20-minutes you’re in your focussed ‘hot seat’ session, other business owners are able to deep-dive with you to ask the questions and suggest fixes for your core issues that you may never have thought of on your own.

Five people are always going to be smarter than one — they’ve read 5x more books, taken 5x more courses, know 5x the contacts that could help you, and more.

These moments are why structured Mastermind sessions are very different to just sitting around with a group friends and throwing about some surface-level solutions.

2. Mastermind groups help you solve your problems faster

As long as you’re willing to show up to your Mastermind sessions humble (aka teachable), and you’re willing to be transparent with ALL the details (including showing real financial figures and raw emails if need be), you will have a very high chance of shortcutting your way to solutions.

Hiding or omitting details to try and ‘pretty up’ the problem will always delay this process.

This is why confidentiality of the Mastermind group is key; you want to have an understanding amongst your group that all of the honest sharing and conversation from your meetings, stays in your meetings.

Hopefully someone in your Mastermind group will have dealt with your specific problem before and have specific advice on how to work through it effectively.

Even better, they may have pointers on what NOT to do; sometimes hearing about the pain that awaits you if you choose to ignore certain advice can be incredibly valuable in helping you weigh up your options for solutions.

3. You get accountability as business owner 

That might sound like a warm fluffy idea for bosses who feel tough enough to manage their business on their own, but when you are your own boss you often have no one holding you accountable which is a huge disadvantage to you.

You may view this as ‘freedom to do as you choose’, but hear me out … that is not what you need. 

When you begin showing up for regular meetings with others, it changes your mindset — you can begin prioritising your to-do list, up-skilling, and even wanting to show up prepared with feedback to report, new questions to ask, and bigger problems to solve.

Accountability like this encourages growth as a business owner that I believe is very difficult to nurture as a solo business owner living in ‘freedom’.
