What is the name of your teaching studio?
What inspired you to start Foundations Music Academy?
I started Foundations Music Academy because of the impact that music education had on my life. Learning an instrument helped me to discover my creativity, build my confidence and develop the grit that propelled me to success later in life. It's my life's mission to help young people develop these foundational skills.
What instruments do you teach?
We teach piano, guitar, drums, voice, strings and winds!
What ages do you teach?
We have a preschool music program that starts as young as three years old and our private lessons typically start around the age of 5, depending on instrument.
Who's a favorite musician/band that's inspired you?
As a jazz pianist, my hero was Oscar Peterson.
How is Foundations Music Academy different to how you learned as a beginner?
Our lessons are more comprehensive and structured. We also include additional performance opportunities that I didn't have growing up.
What's something about River Oaks Music School that you're really proud of?
Our teachers. We've built a faculty of accomplished musicians, including members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. They are here because they love to teach, not just to play. I'm also deeply proud of the community we've grown: more than 5,000 students across four locations, each one getting instruction we genuinely stand behind.
What advice do you give to parents looking for a great teacher for their child?
Look for two things, musical skill and personality. If either of those are lacking you won't see the results you want.
What's something you see successful students doing that new students need to know?
The most successful students understand that there is a path to accomplishing what they want. It's just a series of steps that need to be done in order and you will achieve your goals. Once you understand the path, it's just about being willing to walk it.
What opportunities does Foundations Music Academy offer students beyond lessons?
We offer many recital and performance opportunities throughout the year!
What's the big vision for Foundations Music Academy?
We currently have four locations and hope to spend the next few year opening another four!
